A kill switch is a fail-safe for VPN users. If the encrypted tunnel unexpectedly drops — a network hiccup, a server change — your device would normally fall back to its ordinary connection, exposing your real IP and sending traffic in the clear. A kill switch prevents that by blocking all internet access the moment the tunnel fails, so nothing leaks until the VPN reconnects. It is essential for anyone whose privacy depends on the tunnel never silently failing open.

The feature watches the VPN connection and, on detecting a drop, applies firewall rules that deny traffic to any path except the VPN. Some clients scope it to specific apps; most apply it system-wide. It complements leak protections like DNS-leak prevention: together they ensure that if anything goes wrong, your traffic stops rather than escaping the tunnel. The trade-off is that when the VPN is down you have no connectivity at all — which is exactly the point, since silent exposure is the risk it exists to remove.
