What the Word & Character Counter does

This tool gives you a live, running tally of your text as you type or paste it: the number of characters, characters excluding spaces, words, lines, sentences and paragraphs, plus an estimated reading time. It updates on every keystroke, so there is no “submit” step — you watch the numbers move while you edit. You reach for it whenever a hard limit or a target length matters: a meta description that should sit around 150–160 characters, a tweet or social post capped at a specific count, an essay or assignment with a word ceiling, an ad headline, an SMS that you want to keep inside a single segment, or a blog post you are trying to pace against a reading-time goal. Instead of pasting into a word processor and hunting through a menu, you get every figure at once in a single glance.

How it counts, technically

Each metric is derived with a small, well-defined rule so the results are predictable. Characters is the raw length of the string as the browser stores it, which means it counts UTF-16 code units — ordinary Latin letters are one unit each, but an emoji or certain rarer symbols are stored as a surrogate pair and therefore count as two. Words are counted by matching runs of non-whitespace (\S+), so “don’t” and “192.168.0.1” each count as one word. Lines come from splitting on newline characters, sentences are estimated by counting groups that end in ., !, ? or an ellipsis, and paragraphs are blocks separated by one or more blank lines. Reading time uses the widely quoted average of 200 words per minute: it multiplies your word count out to seconds and shows seconds under a minute or minutes above it. Everything is plain arithmetic on the text in the box.

Practical uses, tips and gotchas

A few things are worth knowing so the numbers never surprise you. Sentence and paragraph counts are heuristics, not grammar: a decimal like “3.5”, an abbreviation like “e.g.”, or a URL can add a phantom sentence boundary, and text with no blank lines is treated as a single paragraph even if it is visually long. The reading-time figure is a guide, not a promise — dense technical prose reads slower than 200 wpm and light copy reads faster. Because characters are UTF-16 units, a caption full of emoji will report a higher character count than the number of glyphs you see, which is exactly what platforms like Twitter/X measure against, so that behaviour is usually what you want.
