What the Browser Fingerprint Viewer reveals

Open almost any website and, before the page has finished loading, a stream of small facts about your device flows out to the server and to whatever analytics and advertising scripts the page embeds. Individually they look innocent: your screen is 2560 by 1440, your timezone is Europe/Berlin, your browser prefers English and then German, you have eight logical CPU cores and cookies switched on. Bundle a dozen or more of those signals together, though, and the combination is frequently unique across millions of visitors. That combination is your browser fingerprint, and it lets trackers recognise you from one site to the next without ever setting a cookie. This tool reads the very same properties a tracking script would read and prints them in a plain table, so you can inspect your own fingerprint exactly the way an ad network sees it.

How the scan works

When you press “Scan my browser,” the page queries standard JavaScript objects that every browser exposes and formats the answers. Nothing is calculated on a server — it is all read live from your own navigator, screen and Intl objects. The values it collects include:

• User agent, platform and languages — the browser and OS string, the CPU platform, and your ordered language preferences.
• Screen and available screen size, device pixel ratio and colour depth — the geometry of your display, including how much room the taskbar or dock steals and whether you run a HiDPI/Retina panel.
• Timezone and UTC offset — read from Intl.DateTimeFormat().resolvedOptions().timeZone, which often pins you to a city-level region.
• Hardware hints — CPU cores via hardwareConcurrency, approximate RAM via deviceMemory, and touch capability via maxTouchPoints.
• Behavioural flags — whether cookies are enabled, the state of the Do Not Track signal, and whether the browser believes it is online.

Privacy researchers measure each of these in bits of entropy: the more unusual a value, the more it narrows you down. A rare screen resolution, an uncommon language order, or a high core count can each remove thousands of other people from the pool, and a handful of such signals together is usually enough to single you out.

Why it matters and how to use the results

Reach for this tool whenever you want a concrete, honest picture of what you are leaking at the browser layer — for example while testing a privacy-hardened browser profile, comparing two browsers, or checking whether an anti-fingerprinting extension actually changes anything. Toggle a setting, rescan, and watch which rows move. A useful gotcha to remember: hiding your IP address and hiding your fingerprint are two different jobs. Routing your traffic through a proxy or VPN changes where your connection appears to originate — something you can confirm with our IP check — but it does not rewrite hardwareConcurrency, your timezone, or your screen geometry, so genuine anonymity means addressing both the network layer and the browser layer. To shrink the browser side, favour a mainstream browser with resist-fingerprinting features enabled, avoid exotic window sizes, and be sceptical of extensions that make you more unusual rather than less.
