What the Whitespace & Blank Line Cleaner does

This tool tidies up the invisible mess in a block of text: stray spaces at the ends of lines, runs of repeated spaces or tabs, and gaps of several blank lines where one (or none) belongs. You choose which fixes to apply with a set of checkboxes and get the cleaned result in one click. How it works, technically

Each option maps to a precise transformation, and they are applied in a sensible order. “Collapse repeated spaces/tabs” replaces any run of spaces, tabs and similar horizontal whitespace with a single space, so columns of alignment padding become one space. “Trim spaces at start/end of each line” removes leading and trailing whitespace line by line, which is what makes indentation and trailing junk disappear. “Collapse multiple blank lines into one” reduces any stack of three or more line breaks down to a single blank line, keeping paragraph separation without the huge gaps. “Remove all blank lines” goes further and deletes every empty line, packing the content together. Finally, “Strip every whitespace character” is the aggressive option: it removes all whitespace — spaces, tabs and newlines alike (matching \s+) — and joins everything into one continuous string, which is occasionally what you need for hashing, comparison or fingerprinting.

Uses, tips and gotchas

The order of operations is deliberate: spaces are collapsed and lines are trimmed first, then blank-line handling runs on the tidied text, so the result is consistent no matter how the input looked. Keep a couple of things in mind. “Strip every whitespace” overrides the gentler options — if it is ticked, you get a single unbroken string, so only use it when that is truly the goal. Standard whitespace cleaning targets the common characters; unusual invisibles such as a non-breaking space (U+00A0) or a zero-width space can survive because they are not always classed as regular whitespace, so if two “identical” strings still refuse to match, an exotic invisible character is often the culprit. And because trimming is per line, it will not merge wrapped lines into paragraphs — it cleans spacing, it does not reflow prose.
