What the MAC Address Formatter does
A MAC address is a 48-bit hardware identifier, but everyone writes it differently: colons, hyphens, Cisco-style dots, or no separators at all, in upper or lower case. This tool takes a MAC in any of those forms and normalizes it into all the standard notations at once — colon-separated lowercase (00:1a:2b:3c:4d:5e), hyphen-separated uppercase (00-1A-2B-3C-4D-5E), Cisco dotted (001a.2b3c.4d5e), and the bare 12-digit form (001a2b3c4d5e). Alongside the reformatting it decodes two things people often need: the OUI (the first three bytes that identify the hardware vendor) and the address type, telling you whether the address is unicast or multicast and whether it is a globally unique burned-in address or a locally administered one. It is the tool to reach for when you are setting up DHCP reservations, MAC filters, switch port security, or simply trying to make one messy address match the format a device demands.
How it works technically
The formatter first strips every separator — colons, hyphens, dots and spaces — and lowercases the result, expecting exactly 12 hexadecimal digits, because 48 bits divide into 12 nibbles or 6 bytes. Anything that is not 12 valid hex digits is rejected. From those six bytes it rebuilds each notation by regrouping: pairs of digits for colon and hyphen forms, groups of four for the Cisco dotted form. The clever part is the two flag bits in the very first byte. The least-significant bit (the I/G bit) distinguishes unicast (0) from multicast (1); the next bit (the U/L bit) distinguishes a globally unique address assigned by the manufacturer (0) from a locally administered one (1). The tool tests those bits with first & 1 and first & 2 and reports the result in plain English. The OUI is simply the first three bytes (24 bits), which the IEEE assigns to hardware makers, so it identifies the vendor even though this offline tool does not ship the full vendor database.
Concrete examples and use cases
- Matching device config — a router wants
0011.2233.4455but your label shows00:11:22:33:44:55; paste either and copy the form you need. - DHCP reservations and MAC filtering — consistent formatting avoids the frustrating case where a reservation silently fails because of a stray separator or case mismatch.
- Spotting randomized MACs — if the type comes back “locally administered,” you are almost certainly looking at a privacy-randomized address from a phone or laptop rather than a real burned-in NIC address.
- Reading the type — a multicast result immediately explains why an address is not a normal host, and
ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ffis the broadcast address.
Practical tips and gotchas
Modern phones and laptops rotate a randomized MAC per network to resist tracking, and every one of those addresses has the locally-administered bit set — so a “locally administered” result is a feature of privacy, not an error. Do not read too much into a vendor OUI: manufacturers buy multiple blocks and virtual machines forge their own, so an OUI is a hint about hardware, not proof. Keep in mind that MAC addresses only matter on the local network segment; routers rewrite the source and destination MAC at every hop, so a MAC you capture is your gateway’s, not the remote server’s. Finally, treat all six bytes as equal-length — a leading zero byte like 00 is significant and must not be dropped.
Privacy: the formatter works entirely in your browser using local JavaScript. The MAC you enter never leaves your device — there is no upload, no server request, and no logging — so hardware addresses from your own equipment stay private. Because a MAC can be used to fingerprint a device on a network, minimizing where it travels is worthwhile; if you also want to control the network path your traffic takes, our VPN keeps that traffic inside an encrypted tunnel.
