What is a SOCKS5 proxy?
SOCKS5 is the flexible workhorse of proxies — protocol-agnostic, TCP and UDP capable, and authenticated. Here's how it works and how to point an app at an s4m endpoint.
SOCKS5, defined
A SOCKS5 proxy is a general-purpose network relay that sits between your client and the internet. Unlike a web-only proxy, SOCKS operates below the application layer: it forwards raw TCP (and, in version 5, UDP) connections without inspecting or rewriting the traffic inside them. That makes it protocol-agnostic — the same proxy can carry HTTP, SSH, database connections, game traffic, or a BitTorrent swarm.
The name is short for "SOCKet Secure", and version 5 is the modern revision. When your client connects, it opens a short handshake: it greets the proxy and lists the authentication methods it supports; the proxy picks one and, if credentials are required, verifies your USER:PASS. The client then sends a connect request naming the destination host and port, the proxy opens that outbound connection on your behalf, and from then on it simply tunnels bytes in both directions. The destination sees the proxy's IP, never yours.
Two properties matter for developers:
- TCP and UDP. SOCKS5 can relay UDP, so it works for DNS, WebRTC, QUIC and similar workloads that plain HTTP proxies cannot carry.
- Remote DNS. Because you can hand the proxy a hostname instead of a resolved IP, name resolution can happen at the proxy — keeping your local resolver out of the loop.
Typical uses include hiding an origin server's IP, scraping and testing from a different network vantage point, routing a single app instead of your whole machine, and reaching services that expect a stable source address. s4m's paid SOCKS5 endpoints are authenticated datacenter proxies — see /proxy/ for details, or grab a throwaway from the /free-proxies/ list for quick testing. If you'd rather tunnel your entire device, a /vpn/ is the better tool.
How it compares
SOCKS5 is not the only way to route traffic. Here's when it wins and when it doesn't.
SOCKS5 vs HTTP proxy
An HTTP proxy understands web requests and can act on headers, but it is limited to HTTP(S) over TCP. SOCKS5 is protocol-agnostic and adds UDP, so it carries anything — not just browser traffic. s4m offers both: SOCKS5 on port 1080 and HTTP on port 3128.
SOCKS5 vs VPN
A VPN encrypts and routes your whole device at the OS level. A SOCKS5 proxy routes only the apps you point at it and adds no encryption of its own. Choose the VPN for full-device privacy, a proxy for surgical, per-app routing and IP-hiding.
Datacenter, authenticated
s4m paid proxies are datacenter proxies — not residential — protected with USER:PASS authentication. They are fast and cost-effective for automation and hiding your origin IP, but they do not imitate home ISP addresses.
Using an s4m SOCKS5 proxy
From zero to a working tunnel in four steps.
Get your credentials
Create an account, or an anonymous account, add a proxy user, and note your host (proxy.s4m.online), port (1080 for SOCKS5, 3128 for HTTP), and USER:PASS. Metered, pay-as-you-go pricing is on /pricing/.
Point your app at the proxy
In your OS, browser, or app proxy settings, choose SOCKS5, set the host to proxy.s4m.online and the port to 1080, enter your USER:PASS, and enable remote DNS so lookups happen at the proxy rather than on your machine.
Verify the exit IP
Load a what-is-my-IP endpoint and confirm you see the proxy's address, not your origin. If privacy matters, recheck for DNS leaks — remote DNS should keep resolution on the proxy side.
Optionally bind a dedicated IP
Add the dedicated personal IP add-on for a static source address that is yours alone — bindable to the proxy or the VPN, and associated with your s4m account.
Code example
curl speaks SOCKS5 natively. Use the socks5h scheme so the hostname is resolved at the proxy, which prevents local DNS leaks.
# SOCKS5 with remote DNS (socks5h resolves the hostname at the proxy) curl --proxy socks5h://USER:[email protected]:1080 https://api.ipify.org # The same request over the HTTP proxy endpoint curl --proxy http://USER:[email protected]:3128 https://api.ipify.org # Environment-variable form (honored by many CLI tools) export ALL_PROXY=socks5h://USER:[email protected]:1080 git clone https://example.com/repo.git # Python (requests + PySocks): pip install "requests[socks]" # proxies = { # "http": "socks5h://USER:[email protected]:1080", # "https": "socks5h://USER:[email protected]:1080", # } # requests.get("https://api.ipify.org", proxies=proxies)
Questions, answered
Does SOCKS5 encrypt my traffic?
No. A SOCKS5 proxy relays your connection but adds no encryption of its own. Traffic that is already encrypted (HTTPS, SSH) stays protected end to end, but plaintext stays plaintext. If you want full-device encryption, use the s4m VPN instead.
What's the difference between socks5 and socks5h in tools like curl?
With socks5, your machine resolves the hostname locally and then connects through the proxy. With socks5h, the hostname is sent to the proxy for remote DNS resolution, which avoids leaking lookups to your local resolver. Prefer socks5h for privacy.
Are s4m proxies residential?
No. s4m paid proxies are datacenter proxies, authenticated with USER:PASS. They are fast and economical for automation and IP-hiding, but they are not residential addresses and are not marketed as such.
Can I get a static IP for my proxy?
Yes. The dedicated personal IP add-on gives you a static address that is yours alone, bindable to the proxy or the VPN, and associated with your s4m account — useful when a service expects a stable source IP.
Should I use a SOCKS5 proxy or a VPN?
Use a SOCKS5 proxy when you want to route specific apps or automation and hide your origin IP with minimal overhead. Use the VPN when you want every connection on the device tunneled and encrypted at the OS level.
Hide your origin IP today
Spin up an authenticated SOCKS5 or HTTP datacenter proxy in minutes. Start on a paid plan, meter only what you use, and add a dedicated IP when you need a stable source address. Need whole-device coverage instead? The WireGuard VPN has you covered.
