Datacenter vs Residential Proxies

Not all proxies are alike. This guide explains how datacenter and residential proxies actually differ, where each one wins, and which fits your project — honestly, from a vendor that only sells datacenter.

How the two proxy types differ

A proxy routes your traffic through an intermediary, so the destination sees the proxy's IP instead of your own. The practical question is where that intermediary IP comes from, because that single detail drives its cost and how a hostile site perceives it.

Datacenter proxies live in commercial hosting facilities. They are stable and cost-effective, because the underlying infrastructure is shared and predictable. The tradeoff: their IP ranges are published and well known, so aggressive anti-bot systems can flag or block them more readily. Residential proxies borrow IPs assigned by consumer ISPs, so they blend in with ordinary home traffic and are harder to detect — but they are slower, noticeably pricier, and frequently sourced through consent chains that are ethically murky.

s4m sells authenticated datacenter proxies — SOCKS5 and HTTP, metered and pay-as-you-go. We do not sell residential proxies, and we won't pretend otherwise. If you need to test against residential-type IPs, our free public proxy list harvests and validates third-party proxies from open sources, filterable by country, protocol, and anonymity — use at your own risk. When you want a stable identity that is yours alone, add a dedicated personal IP, and for full-tunnel privacy that hides your origin server see the WireGuard VPN.

What s4m actually offers

One honest lineup — no residential upsell.

Datacenter proxies

Authenticated SOCKS5 on port 1080 and HTTP on port 3128, reached at proxy.s4m.online with USER:PASS. Stable, metered pay-as-you-go access on our own clean IP ranges — ideal for APIs, automation, CI pipelines, and keeping your real server IP out of sight.

Dedicated personal IP

An optional static IP that belongs to you alone and nobody else shares. Bind it to a proxy or the VPN. Its allocation stays associated with your s4m account. Perfect when a service expects requests from one consistent address instead of a rotating pool.

Free public proxy list

Third-party proxies harvested from open sources and continuously validated for liveness and anonymity, filterable by country, protocol, and anonymity level. It includes residential-type IPs, so it is a handy way to test hostile targets — but it is use-at-your-own-risk, not for sensitive traffic.

WireGuard VPN

Prefer to tunnel everything? Our WireGuard VPN (OpenVPN also available) gives a flat monthly rate (not metered per-GB) on paid plans with apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, and routers — hiding your origin IP so third parties never see your main server.

Using an s4m datacenter proxy

Authenticate with USER:PASS against proxy.s4m.online.

bash
# SOCKS5 proxy (port 1080)
curl -x socks5h://USER:[email protected]:1080 https://api.ipify.org

# HTTP / HTTPS proxy (port 3128)
curl -x http://USER:[email protected]:3128 https://api.ipify.org

# Apply to a whole shell session
export ALL_PROXY="socks5h://USER:[email protected]:1080"
curl https://example.com

# Python (requests)
# proxies = {"http": "http://USER:[email protected]:3128",
#            "https": "http://USER:[email protected]:3128"}
# requests.get("https://example.com", proxies=proxies)

How to choose

Four quick questions to land on the right tool.

Name the task

Hiding your origin server, hitting public APIs, running CI, ad or SEO verification, or general automation? Datacenter proxies are the fast, cheap, correct default for all of these.

Gauge the target's hostility

If a specific site aggressively blocks known datacenter ranges, borrow a residential-type IP from the free public proxy list and test whether it slips through before you invest more effort.

Decide if you need a fixed identity

Some services whitelist or expect a single consistent IP. If that is you, add a dedicated personal IP rather than rotating through a shared pool.

Size your budget and volume

Metered datacenter usage stays cheap and predictable as you scale. Residential pricing climbs with every gigabyte, so only reach for it when detection genuinely demands it.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Does s4m sell residential proxies?

No. We sell fast, authenticated datacenter SOCKS5 and HTTP proxies, plus an optional dedicated personal IP. If you need to try residential-type IPs, use our free public proxy list — third-party proxies validated from open sources, offered use-at-your-own-risk.

Will datacenter proxies get blocked?

On aggressively defended anti-bot sites they can be flagged, because datacenter IP ranges are public and well known. For most APIs, testing, CI, automation, and simply hiding your origin IP they work great. If a particular target is hostile, test residential-type IPs from the free list first.

What's the difference between the dedicated IP and a proxy?

A proxy routes you through a shared pool of our datacenter addresses. The dedicated personal IP is a static IP that is yours alone, bindable to a proxy or the VPN and associated with your s4m account — useful when a service expects a single, consistent address.

How are s4m proxies authenticated?

With a username and password. Endpoints follow the pattern proxy.s4m.online:1080 for SOCKS5 and proxy.s4m.online:3128 for HTTP, using your USER:PASS credentials. No IP allowlisting is required.

Are the free public proxies safe to use?

They are third-party proxies harvested from open sources and continuously validated for liveness and anonymity, but they are not operated by us. Treat them as use-at-your-own-risk — ideal for testing and experimentation, not for sensitive or production traffic.

Get fast datacenter proxies

Spin up authenticated SOCKS5 and HTTP proxies on clean datacenter ranges, add a dedicated IP when you need a stable identity, or test against our free public proxy list first. Metered, pay-as-you-go, no-logs by design.
