Best VPN protocols in 2026

Compare WireGuard, OpenVPN and IKEv2/IPsec, and understand how the V2Ray proxy framework differs. Choose by client support, network restrictions and measured performance, rather than universal speed or access promises.

How to judge a VPN protocol

Five properties decide whether a protocol is right for you.

Compare five properties: security configuration and maintenance, throughput and CPU use, recovery after a network change, behaviour under filtering, and client support. A small codebase alone does not prove security. Test the same device, exit and network before ranking performance.

The s4m WireGuard VPN also offers OpenVPN profiles. Check the supplied transport: availability of a protocol does not establish support for every transport or port, and neither guarantees anonymity or access through filtering.

VPN protocols and proxy frameworks

What each one is genuinely good at.

WireGuard

Uses UDP and a fixed cryptographic suite including ChaCha20-Poly1305. Kernel and userspace implementations exist. Performance and reconnection depend on the client and network; WireGuard does not provide built-in obfuscation.

OpenVPN

Supports UDP or TCP, with matching client and server configuration. TCP 443 does not make its traffic indistinguishable from HTTPS or guarantee DPI evasion. The current s4m generator supplies OpenVPN UDP profiles, not TCP 443 profiles.

IKEv2/IPsec

IKEv2 negotiates IPsec security associations. The optional MOBIKE extension supports changes of network address when both peers support it. Client availability and network filtering vary; IKEv2/IPsec is not offered by the current s4m generator.

V2Ray / obfuscation layers

V2Ray is a modular proxy framework supporting multiple protocols and transports, not one VPN protocol. Encryption and obfuscation depend on the chosen configuration. It does not guarantee passage through DPI and is not offered by the current s4m generator.

Which protocol should you pick?

Choose a supported configuration, then test it on your network.

For s4m VPN, use a compatible client and the supplied WireGuard or OpenVPN profile. The current OpenVPN generator issues UDP profiles. Do not change the transport or port to TCP 443 unless the provider supplies a matching profile and endpoint. There is no universal fastest or most secure choice.

For one app or script, consider an authenticated SOCKS5 or HTTP proxy and verify its routing and DNS behaviour. See the WireGuard vs OpenVPN comparison. Primary references: WireGuard limitations, OpenVPN manual, MOBIKE and V2Ray.

A minimal WireGuard client config

Illustrative IPv4-only skeleton, not a usable s4m profile. Use the issued addresses, keys, DNS and endpoint. s4m generates issued keys server-side; keep the downloaded private key secret. Configure and test IPv6 separately.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Is WireGuard actually more secure than OpenVPN?

Neither protocol is automatically more secure for every user. Client and server maintenance, cryptographic configuration, key handling and routing matter. A smaller codebase or protocol name alone does not establish provider privacy or a security guarantee.

Why would I ever choose OpenVPN over WireGuard?

Choose OpenVPN when it better matches your client or provider configuration. TCP 443 requires server support and does not guarantee evasion of DPI. Current s4m OpenVPN profiles use UDP, so switching from WireGuard does not provide a TCP fallback when UDP is blocked.

Does s4m support IKEv2 or V2Ray?

The current s4m profile generator offers WireGuard and OpenVPN. It does not issue IKEv2/IPsec or V2Ray profiles. This article compares those technologies for context; it does not announce additional s4m protocols or obfuscation support.

Does the protocol I choose change my price or data limits?

A protocol name does not define a provider's billing or data limits. Check the current s4m plan and the protocols available for that plan before ordering. This comparison does not introduce a new tariff or change an existing subscription.

Connect over WireGuard in minutes

Use a supplied WireGuard or OpenVPN profile with a compatible client, then check connectivity, routing and performance on your device and network.
