Telegram MTProto Proxy: How It Works and How to Use One

Telegram supports its own proxy type, MTProto, designed to keep the app reachable where it is blocked. This guide explains what an MTProto proxy is, how it differs from a normal SOCKS5 proxy, how to add one, and how it relates to running your own.

What MTProto proxy is

Telegram supports two ways to route its traffic through an intermediary: a standard SOCKS5 proxy, and its own MTProto proxy. MTProto is Telegram's transport protocol, and an MTProto proxy speaks it natively. The key feature is a secret — a token shared with the proxy — and, in newer variants, a mode that disguises the traffic to look like ordinary TLS (the "fake-TLS" or ee-prefixed secrets). That obfuscation is why MTProto proxies became popular in countries that block or throttle Telegram: the connection is harder to identify and filter than a plain proxy.

Compared with SOCKS5, MTProto is Telegram-specific (it only proxies Telegram, not your whole device), integrates directly into the app, and is built with censorship circumvention in mind. A SOCKS5 proxy is generic and can carry any app's TCP traffic, including Telegram, but does not obfuscate itself the way fake-TLS MTProto does.

Add a proxy in Telegram

Telegram accepts MTProto and SOCKS5 proxies in the same settings area.

Open proxy settings

Go to Settings, then Data and Storage, then Proxy Settings (labels vary slightly by platform). Enable "Use proxy".

Add the proxy

Tap Add Proxy and choose the type. For MTProto, enter the server, port and secret. For SOCKS5, enter the server, port and, if required, username and password.

Use a t.me link if you have one

MTProto proxies are often shared as tg:// or t.me/proxy?server=... links. Opening one in Telegram pre-fills the fields — verify the source before trusting it.

Connect and verify

Select the proxy and confirm the app reconnects and messages flow. A padlock/shield indicator shows the proxy is active.

Reliability, trust and running your own

Public MTProto proxy lists exist, but treat them with caution: a proxy operator can see your connection metadata (not your end-to-end secret chats, but timing and IPs), free public proxies come and go, and a hostile operator is a real risk. Prefer a proxy you or someone you trust runs.

Running your own MTProto proxy is straightforward on a small VPS using Telegram's official server or well-known community implementations — you generate a secret, open a port, and share the link. If you would rather have a box you fully control without maintaining proxy software yourself, s4m offers a private VPN server and a dedicated IP. Note the honest boundary: s4m provides authenticated SOCKS5/HTTP proxies and WireGuard/OpenVPN, not a managed MTProto service — Telegram works over our SOCKS5, and MTProto is something you would self-host on your own server. No proxy guarantees access where networks actively block it; obfuscation lowers the odds of filtering, it does not eliminate them.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Is an MTProto proxy the same as a VPN?

No. An MTProto proxy only routes Telegram, and only inside the Telegram app. A VPN encrypts and routes all traffic from your device across every app. Use MTProto to keep Telegram reachable; use a VPN when you want everything tunnelled.

Can a Telegram proxy read my messages?

It sees connection metadata — your IP, timing and volume — and relays your traffic, but it cannot read the contents of your end-to-end encrypted secret chats. Regular cloud chats are encrypted to Telegram's servers, not to the proxy. Still, only use a proxy operator you trust.

Does s4m provide an MTProto proxy?

s4m provides authenticated SOCKS5 and HTTP proxies (Telegram works over SOCKS5), WireGuard/OpenVPN VPN, a private VPN server and a dedicated IP. It does not offer a managed MTProto proxy service; you can self-host MTProto on an s4m private server if you want that specific protocol.

A server you control for Telegram

Use s4m SOCKS5 with Telegram, or run your own MTProto proxy on an s4m private server with a dedicated IP. No-logs by design, anonymous accounts, crypto accepted. No guarantees against active blocking.
