VLESS + Reality: A Complete Setup Guide
VLESS+Reality is currently one of the most resilient ways to tunnel through deep packet inspection, because it borrows the TLS handshake of a real website instead of presenting its own. This guide explains how Reality works and how to set up an XRay server and client, with honest caveats.
Why Reality is different
VLESS is a lean, stateless protocol in the XRay platform (the successor to V2Ray). Reality is the transport layer that makes it hard to detect. Older TLS-based obfuscation presented its own certificate, which active probing and DPI could catch — a censor could connect to the server and notice it was not really the website it claimed to be.
Reality solves this by borrowing a real website's TLS handshake. You point Reality at a legitimate high-traffic domain (the "SNI" target), and to any observer — including an active prober connecting to your server — the handshake looks exactly like a connection to that real site, with that site's genuine certificate. There is no fake certificate to buy, leak or fingerprint. Only a client holding your keys is routed into the tunnel; everyone else is transparently passed to (or sees) the real site. That is why, as of now, Reality is among the hardest approaches for DPI to block. It is still a moving target: pick an appropriate, reachable SNI target and understand this can change as censors adapt.
Set up an XRay VLESS+Reality server
On a VPS or s4m private server. XRay-core provides the xray binary and a key generator.
Install XRay-core
Install xray on your server (official install script or your package manager). Confirm with xray version.
Generate keys and an ID
Run xray x25519 to get a private/public key pair for Reality, and generate a UUID for the VLESS client. Pick a short random shortId.
Choose an SNI target
Select a real, popular TLS site that is reachable from the censored network and unrelated to you (its handshake is what you borrow). Set it as the dest and serverNames in the Reality settings.
Write the config and start
Configure an inbound: VLESS on 443, with Reality settings (private key, dest, serverNames, shortIds). Start xray as a systemd service, then build the matching client config from the UUID, public key, SNI and shortId.
Clients and honest limits
Client apps that speak VLESS+Reality include v2rayN (Windows), NekoBox/sing-box (cross-platform), Hiddify, and Streisand/Shadowrocket on mobile. You feed them the server address, port 443, the UUID, the Reality public key, the SNI you chose and the shortId — usually pasted as a single vless:// share link or scanned as a QR code.
The honest boundary: s4m does not run VLESS/Reality as a managed service. We sell WireGuard/OpenVPN, SOCKS5/HTTP proxies, and — relevant here — a private VPN server and dedicated IP you fully control, which is exactly what you need to self-host XRay. Reality is powerful but not a guarantee: censors continually adapt, a poor SNI choice can get your server flagged, and any circumvention method can eventually be blocked. Treat it as your strongest current option against heavy DPI, not a permanent solution. For the wider context see the DPI bypass overview.
Questions, answered
What makes Reality harder to detect than normal TLS obfuscation?
Reality borrows a real website's TLS handshake and certificate, so an active prober connecting to your server sees a genuine site, not a proxy with a suspicious or self-issued certificate. There is no fake certificate to fingerprint, which defeats the active-probing technique DPI systems use.
Does s4m provide VLESS+Reality?
No. s4m provides WireGuard/OpenVPN VPN and SOCKS5/HTTP proxies, plus a private server and dedicated IP you control. VLESS+Reality is something you self-host on that server using XRay-core; s4m does not offer it as a managed service.
How do I choose an SNI target for Reality?
Pick a real, popular TLS website that is reachable from the censored network, unrelated to you, and stable. Its handshake is what your server mimics. A poorly chosen or blocked SNI can make your server stand out, so choose carefully and be ready to change it.
Run Reality on a server you control
Self-host XRay VLESS+Reality on an s4m private server with a dedicated IP — full root control, no-logs by design, crypto accepted. Reality is a strong option against DPI, not a guarantee.
