VPN and proxy FAQ: short, honest answers

Quick, straight answers to the questions people actually ask about VPNs and proxies — can you be tracked, is it legal, why won't my proxy connect — without the marketing spin.

Can a VPN be tracked?

The honest, non-marketing answer.

A VPN hides your real IP from the websites and services you connect to — they see the VPN's exit address instead. That defeats the most common form of tracking: IP-based identification and logging by the destination. It does not make you invisible.

You can still be tracked by other means: browser cookies and fingerprinting, logging into an account that identifies you, or a provider that keeps connection logs. This is why a no-logs policy matters — a VPN that records nothing has nothing to hand over. s4m is no-logs by design on a RAM-first architecture for exactly this reason. But if you sign into your real-name account over the VPN, the VPN cannot un-tell that. Realistic expectation: a good VPN hides your network origin, not your behaviour.

Why isn't my proxy working?

The five usual causes, in order of likelihood.

It's dead

Free proxies expire constantly, often within hours. Test it with a proxy checker; if the request times out, the proxy is gone — grab another or use an authenticated one that stays up.

Wrong credentials or port

Authenticated proxies need the exact USER:PASS and the right port — SOCKS5 and HTTP use different ones (1080 vs 3128 on s4m). A 407 error means authentication failed; recheck the username, password and port.

Wrong protocol scheme

Pointing an HTTP client at a SOCKS5 port (or vice versa) fails silently or errors. Match the scheme to the port: socks5h:// for SOCKS5, http:// for HTTP. socks5h also resolves DNS remotely.

The target blocked it

Some sites detect and block datacenter or known-proxy IPs. If one specific site fails while everything else works, the proxy is fine — that destination is refusing it.

A few more quick ones

Rapid answers to the rest.

Does a proxy encrypt my traffic? No. A plain SOCKS5 or HTTP proxy only changes your exit IP; encryption is whatever the app already uses (HTTPS). Want the whole connection encrypted? Use a VPN.

VPN or proxy — which do I need? A VPN protects the whole device with one encrypted tunnel; a proxy routes one app or script. Everyday privacy → VPN. Per-task routing, scraping, automation → proxy. Many people use both; see the VPN vs proxy comparison.

Are free proxies safe? For throwaway tests, fine. Never send logins or sensitive data through them — the operator is unknown and some log or inject content. Use the free list to learn and prototype, and paid proxies or the VPN for real work.

Will a VPN slow me down? A little — it adds one hop. WireGuard keeps the cost small, and choosing a nearby endpoint matters more than any speed claim. See how latency really works.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Can my ISP see what I do on a VPN?

Your ISP can see that you are connected to a VPN and how much data flows, but not the sites or content inside the encrypted tunnel. It cannot read your traffic. What it sees is a single encrypted connection to the VPN endpoint, which is the point.

Does a VPN make me completely anonymous?

No. It hides your IP from the sites you visit and, with a no-logs provider, leaves little trail on the VPN itself. But cookies, browser fingerprinting and logging into identifiable accounts can still track you. Treat a VPN as strong IP privacy, not total anonymity.

Why does my proxy work on some sites but not others?

Because those sites specifically detect and block proxy or datacenter IPs, while the proxy itself is fine. If everything works except one target, the proxy is not broken — that destination is refusing it. A different IP or a residential-type address may get through.

Is it safe to log into my bank through a proxy or VPN?

Through the s4m VPN, yes — traffic is encrypted end to end and to your bank over HTTPS. Through a random free proxy, no: the operator is unknown and could log or tamper with traffic. Never send credentials through untrusted free proxies.
