What Is an IP Address?
Your IP address is how the internet routes traffic to you, and how websites recognize where a request came from. Here is what an IP reveals, and how a VPN or proxy changes what others see.
What an IP address actually is
An IP address (Internet Protocol address) is the number that identifies a device on a network so that data knows where to go. Every request you send — loading a page, sending an email, streaming video — is split into packets stamped with a source and a destination IP, the way an envelope carries a return address and a delivery address.
There are two kinds that matter here. A private IP (like 192.168.1.24) is handed out by your router and only means something inside your home or office network. A public IP is the single address your internet provider assigns to your connection, and it is the one the rest of the internet actually sees. Your router performs NAT (network address translation), mapping every phone, laptop and TV behind it to that one public address.
So when you visit a website, the site does not see your laptop's private IP. It sees the public IP of your connection, plus whatever your browser and headers reveal on top. That public IP is assigned by your ISP and can change over time (dynamic) or stay fixed (static).
If you want to see your own public address right now, use our what-is-my-IP tool. Everything a website logs about your location starts from that number, which is exactly why replacing it with a VPN or proxy exit IP changes what others can see.
IPv4 vs IPv6
IP addresses come in two formats — the classic short one and its much larger successor.
IPv4 is the classic four-number style; the world has run out of fresh ones, so providers share and reuse them heavily. IPv6 is the newer, vastly larger format built to give every device its own address.
| Feature | IPv4 | IPv6 |
|---|---|---|
| Looks like | 203.0.113.42 | 2001:0db8:85a3::8a2e:0370:7334 |
| Length | 32-bit, four numbers 0-255 | 128-bit, eight hex groups |
| Address space | ~4.3 billion | Astronomically large |
| Status | Exhausted, heavily shared via NAT | The long-term replacement |
Most connections today can use either, and a site may log whichever your device presents. A privacy note: because IPv6 hands out so many unique addresses, it can make a single device easier to single out — good VPN and proxy setups account for both.
What your IP reveals, and what it doesn't
Your public IP is not your name or street address, but it is not anonymous either. From it, a website or service can usually infer:
- Rough location — often the right country, region or city, though it can be off by a wide margin, especially on mobile networks.
- Your ISP or hosting provider — the network that owns the address block.
- Connection type — residential, business, mobile or datacenter.
What it does not directly reveal is your identity, your precise GPS location, or what you do inside an encrypted connection. Linking an IP to a real person generally requires records held by the ISP. Still, sites routinely use your IP for geo-blocking, rate limits, ad targeting and fraud scoring — so hiding your origin IP is the most direct way to reduce what strangers can tie back to your connection.
Check your IP, then change what sites see
Use curl to see the IP a website records for you, then send the same request through an authenticated proxy and watch the exit IP change.
# See the public IP a website sees for you curl https://api.ipify.org # Route the request through an authenticated SOCKS5 proxy — # the site now sees the proxy's exit IP, not your origin IP curl --proxy socks5h://USER:[email protected]:1080 https://api.ipify.org # Same idea over an HTTP proxy curl --proxy http://USER:[email protected]:3128 https://api.ipify.org
How a VPN or proxy swaps your visible IP
Both tools work by sending your traffic through an intermediary, so the destination site sees the intermediary's exit IP instead of your origin IP.
- A WireGuard or OpenVPN tunnel encrypts all traffic from your device and routes every app through the VPN exit. Best for whole-device privacy on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS and routers.
- An authenticated SOCKS5 or HTTP proxy reroutes a specific app or script. Our paid proxies are datacenter IPs — fast and metered, ideal for scraping, automation and testing.
Want a fixed exit that is yours alone? A dedicated personal IP can be bound to either the VPN or proxy, associated with your s4m account. Prefer to experiment first? Questions, answered
Can someone find my home address from my IP?
No. An IP reveals rough geolocation — often just the city or region — and your ISP, not your name or street address. Only your ISP can link an IP to an account, and typically only under a legal request.
Does my IP address change?
It can. Many ISPs assign dynamic IPs that rotate periodically, while some connections keep a static IP. Restarting a router or reconnecting can also change it. A dedicated personal IP stays fixed by design.
What's the difference between my public and private IP?
Your private IP identifies your device inside your own network; your public IP is the single address your ISP exposes to the internet. Websites only ever see the public one.
Does a VPN or proxy hide my IP completely?
They replace your visible origin IP with an exit IP, so sites see the exit instead. No tool makes you invisible — browser fingerprinting and logins can still identify you — but swapping the IP removes the most direct signal.
Should I use a VPN or a proxy?
Use a VPN to protect your whole device with one encrypted tunnel; use a datacenter proxy to route a single app or script. See our compare page to choose.
See your IP, then hide it
Check the address the internet sees for you right now, then swap it for a VPN or proxy exit IP.
