WhatsApp Proxy: How the Built-In Feature Works
Since 2023 WhatsApp has a built-in proxy feature that keeps you connected when the service is blocked. This guide explains what it does, what it does not protect, how to enter a proxy address, and how you can host your own.
What WhatsApp's proxy feature does
In January 2023 WhatsApp added a native proxy option so people could stay connected during internet shutdowns and service blocks. When your normal connection to WhatsApp's servers is filtered, you enter the address of a proxy — run by a volunteer, an organisation, or yourself — and WhatsApp routes its traffic through that intermediary to reach its servers.
Two points matter. First, WhatsApp emphasises that using a proxy does not weaken end-to-end encryption: your messages stay encrypted between you and the recipient, and the proxy operator cannot read them. Second, the feature is narrow — it only helps WhatsApp reach its own servers when the direct path is blocked. It is not a general privacy tool and it does not tunnel anything other than WhatsApp.
Add a proxy in WhatsApp
The proxy setting lives in the app's storage/data settings.
Open proxy settings
Go to Settings, then Storage and Data, then Proxy. Tap "Use Proxy" and then "Set Proxy".
Enter the proxy address
Type the proxy host you were given (a domain or IP). WhatsApp uses standard proxy ports behind the scenes; you generally supply just the hostname.
Save and check the status
Save, then look for a green checkmark indicating the connection succeeded. If it fails, the proxy may be down or blocked — try another.
Only use proxies you trust
A proxy relays your (encrypted) traffic and sees your IP and connection metadata. Prefer one run by you or an organisation you trust rather than a random address posted publicly.
Host your own WhatsApp proxy
WhatsApp published an open-source proxy you can run on a VPS, so anyone with a server and an open port can help others (or themselves) reconnect. It is essentially a small relay in front of WhatsApp's servers, typically deployed with Docker. If you would rather not maintain that yourself, you still need a server with a stable public address — which is where a private VPN server or a dedicated IP from s4m is useful as the underlying box.
Be clear on the honest boundary: s4m sells authenticated SOCKS5/HTTP proxies, WireGuard/OpenVPN, a private server and a dedicated IP — not a managed WhatsApp-proxy service. If your goal is simply to reach WhatsApp (and everything else) on a restrictive network, a VPN tunnel is often the simpler tool than the app's single-service proxy. And as always, where a network actively blocks a service, no proxy or VPN is guaranteed to get through — these tools improve your odds, they do not promise access.
It also helps to know what the proxy feature will not do for you. It is strictly a reachability tool for WhatsApp during a block: it does not speed up a slow connection, does not hide your activity from WhatsApp itself, and does not cover any other app on your phone. If a shutdown is affecting more than WhatsApp — which is common, since blocks often hit multiple services at once — a single-service proxy leaves everything else stranded, and a full-device VPN tunnel is the more practical response. And because a proxy operator can see your IP and connection metadata, avoid unknown public proxies posted in group chats during an outage, when scammers reliably appear; use one from an organisation or person you actually trust.
Questions, answered
Does a WhatsApp proxy break end-to-end encryption?
No. WhatsApp states that using a proxy keeps your messages end-to-end encrypted; the proxy relays traffic but cannot read your message contents. It does see your IP and connection metadata, so still choose a proxy operator you trust.
Is the WhatsApp proxy a VPN?
No. It only routes WhatsApp, and only to reach WhatsApp's servers when the direct path is blocked. A VPN routes and encrypts all your device's traffic across every app. For a network that blocks many services, a VPN is usually the broader solution.
Can I run my own WhatsApp proxy?
Yes. WhatsApp released an open-source proxy you can deploy on a VPS, commonly via Docker, then share the address. You need a server with a stable public IP; an s4m private server or dedicated IP can serve as that box, though s4m does not offer a managed WhatsApp-proxy product.
Stay reachable on restrictive networks
Run a WhatsApp proxy on your own s4m private server, or tunnel everything with WireGuard/OpenVPN. No-logs by design, anonymous accounts, crypto accepted. No guarantee against active blocking.
