SOCKS5 Authentication
SOCKS5 authentication is how a SOCKS5 proxy verifies a client is allowed to use it, most commonly with a username-and-password exchange.
In plain terms
SOCKS5 authentication is the step where a SOCKS5 proxy confirms a client is permitted before relaying traffic. The protocol negotiates a method first; the common choices are "no authentication" and username/password. With username/password, the client sends credentials that the proxy checks against its list of accounts. This gates access so only paying or authorised users consume the proxy, and it ties usage to an account for metering. It is a sibling of the header-based scheme used by HTTP proxies, covered under proxy authentication.
How it works with s4m
The s4m SOCKS5 endpoint proxy.s4m.online:1080 requires USER:PASS. In cURL, --socks5-hostname selects the proxy and remote DNS; supply authentication in the client as well. The current s4m service does not offer IP-only authentication or a combined client-IP allowlist mode. A destination IP allowlist is separate from s4m proxy authentication. It does not enable password-free access to the current s4m proxy service. Related topics: IP allowlisting. Keep proxy credentials out of shared code and logs. If exposed, revoke or replace them in your account.
Practical notes
Keep proxy credentials out of shared code and logs. If exposed, revoke or replace them in your account. Proxy credentials work with the endpoint issued in your account, subject to service and account policies. Destination IP rules are separate. Related topics: IP allowlisting, dedicated IP. In a cURL SOCKS5 test, --socks5-hostname selects the proxy; supply credentials too, then check the returned exit IP.
Questions, answered
How do I authenticate to the s4m SOCKS5 proxy?
Supply your username and password to the proxy at proxy.s4m.online:1080. In cURL that is a --socks5-hostname URL containing USER:PASS; in most apps you enter the host, port and credentials in the SOCKS5 proxy fields. The proxy then relays traffic under your account.
