SOCKS5

SOCKS5 is a proxy protocol that forwards TCP and UDP traffic between a client and a destination at the transport layer, independent of the application.

What it is

SOCKS5 is a forwarding protocol with methods for authentication, TCP connections and UDP associations. Supported methods and commands depend on the implementation. It does not interpret HTTP as an application protocol, but that does not stop an operator observing unencrypted data. Use end-to-end encryption for confidential application traffic. See also SOCKS4.

How it works

A SOCKS5 client negotiates a method and requests a connection through a proxy. The destination normally sees the exit IP rather than the client's origin IP. Username/password authentication controls access but does not itself encrypt credentials or payloads. A SOCKS5 tunnel can carry HTTPS; its confidentiality still depends on end-to-end TLS. See RFC 1928 and RFC 1929.

How it relates to s4m

Authenticated SOCKS5 (1080) and HTTP (3128) use the configured endpoint. Proxy credentials remain required when you choose another available exit. s4m has selectable public exit configurations. Use the endpoint or profile issued for the protocol and location selected in your account. Selecting an exit does not automatically rotate every request. Configure your client for the issued endpoints, preserve stateful sessions and respect applicable limits. Documented default endpoint example: proxy.s4m.online:1080. FAQ

Questions, answered

What is the difference between SOCKS5 and an HTTP proxy?

SOCKS5 defines TCP forwarding and UDP associations; actual support depends on the service. HTTP proxies handle HTTP messages, and CONNECT can tunnel other byte streams where permitted. Neither a SOCKS5 label nor username/password authentication alone provides payload confidentiality; HTTPS still relies on end-to-end TLS.
