What is an ASN? Autonomous systems for proxy users
An ASN is the number that identifies who owns a chunk of the internet — and it is the first thing a website checks to decide whether your IP is a home connection or a data center. Here is what ASNs are and why they matter to proxy users.
The internet is a network of networks
The internet is not one network but tens of thousands of independent ones — ISPs, hosting companies, universities, big enterprises — stitched together. Each of those independently operated networks is an autonomous system, and each has a unique Autonomous System Number (ASN) that identifies it. An ASN is to a network operator what a phone area code is to a region: a stable identifier for a block of the address space under one administrative control. When you see something like "AS15169 — Google", that is an ASN and the operator it belongs to.
Every public IP address on the internet belongs to exactly one ASN at any moment, which is why a quick lookup on any IP reveals the organisation behind it and, crucially, what kind of network it is.
How ASNs actually work: BGP
ASNs exist so that networks can tell each other how to reach ranges of addresses. That conversation happens over BGP (the Border Gateway Protocol), the internet's core routing protocol. Each autonomous system announces the IP ranges it owns to its neighbours, identified by its ASN, and those announcements propagate so that routers worldwide learn "to reach this block of IPs, send traffic toward AS-such-and-such". It is the mechanism that lets a packet from your laptop find a server on the other side of the planet through a chain of independent networks.
For our purposes the routing detail matters less than the consequence: because every IP is tied to an ASN, and every ASN is tied to a known operator of a known type — consumer ISP, mobile carrier, cloud/hosting provider — the ASN is a reliable label for the nature of any address.
Why ASN matters to proxy users
This is the payoff. When you route through a proxy or VPN, the destination sees the exit IP — and the very first thing anti-fraud systems do is look up that IP's ASN. If the ASN belongs to a hosting provider, the IP is instantly flagged as datacenter; if it belongs to a consumer ISP, it looks residential; a carrier ASN looks mobile. That single classification feeds directly into your IP reputation and fraud score and shapes how a site treats you — see how sites detect proxies. It is also why datacenter, residential and mobile proxies behave so differently: they exit from different ASN types.
s4m is transparent that its proxies are authenticated datacenter exits, so their ASN identifies them honestly as such — appropriate wherever a datacenter origin is fine, and kept clean with a dedicated IP. Look up the ASN and GeoIP of any exit with the s4m tools before a job so you know how a target will read it. For the full glossary definition see ASN.
Questions, answered
How do I find the ASN of an IP address?
Use a WHOIS or IP-info lookup — enter the address and it returns the ASN, the operator name and the network type. Many web and command-line tools expose this, and the s4m IP tools show it too. The ASN tells you whether an IP is residential, mobile or datacenter.
Why do websites care about my IP's ASN?
Because the ASN reveals what kind of network an IP belongs to. A hosting-provider ASN marks the IP as datacenter (a strong proxy/VPN signal), while a consumer-ISP or carrier ASN looks residential or mobile. That classification feeds your fraud score and how the site treats you.
Know how your exit is classified
Look up the ASN, type and GeoIP of any exit with the s4m tools — and use honest, authenticated datacenter proxies with a clean dedicated IP where a datacenter origin fits the job.
