IP Reputation
IP reputation is a trust rating that websites and security services assign to an IP address based on its history, network and observed behaviour.
In plain terms
IP reputation is how much a website, mail server or anti-fraud service trusts a given address. It is built from signals like the ASN (datacenter vs residential), presence on block-lists, past spam or abuse from that IP, its geolocation and how many users share it. A clean, stable address sails through; a poor-reputation one triggers extra checks, CAPTCHAs or outright blocks. Reputation is dynamic — a shared address can be dragged down by the behaviour of others who used it before you.
How it works with s4m
Because reputation is shaped by who else uses an address, a shared pool is a mixed bag, while a stable, exclusive IP lets you build and keep a clean history. That is the appeal of an s4m dedicated / personal IP add-on: one address reserved for you, which you can pair with IP whitelisting so a service only accepts your traffic. To protect a good reputation, keep request rates reasonable and avoid abusive patterns; a well-behaved IP stays trusted, whereas aggressive automation degrades even a good address's standing over time.
Practical notes
An address can have a prior history even when allocated to one customer. A source-IP rule can admit several people behind the same NAT. Assignment does not guarantee reputation or fewer challenges. Related topics: dedicated IP, IP allowlisting, CAPTCHAs.
Questions, answered
Why does a shared proxy sometimes get blocked?
Because reputation attaches to the IP, not to you. If earlier users of a shared address triggered abuse signals, the address may already be distrusted when you arrive. A dedicated IP avoids this by giving you a clean, exclusive history to maintain.
