Bandwidth
Bandwidth is the maximum rate at which data can move across a connection, typically measured in bits per second such as Mbps or Gbps.
In plain terms
Bandwidth is the capacity of a link — the theoretical ceiling on how much data it can carry per second, measured in bits per second (Mbps, Gbps). It is often confused with speed, but bandwidth is width, not delay: it says nothing about latency. The data you actually move is throughput, which is bounded by bandwidth but reduced by overhead, loss and round-trip delays. A useful analogy is a road: bandwidth is the number of lanes, latency is how long the trip takes, and throughput is the cars that actually arrive.
Why it matters
When you connect through a proxy or the VPN, your effective bandwidth becomes the smallest capacity along the whole path. A fast home line can still feel constrained if an intermediate hop is the bottleneck. s4m paid proxies are metered pay-as-you-go, so the meaningful figure is how much data you transfer rather than a peak rate; paid VPN plans bill at a flat monthly rate instead of per-GB. For heavy jobs, estimate the volume of data first so you can predict cost and check that no single hop caps your throughput.
Practical notes
Remember that your usable bandwidth is set by the narrowest point on the path, so a fast home line can still be capped by an intermediate hop. When planning a large transfer, estimate the data volume up front: with metered s4m proxies that predicts your cost, and it tells you whether a slow result is a bandwidth ceiling or simply high latency throttling your throughput. Measure a real transfer rather than trusting an advertised peak rate.
Questions, answered
Does more bandwidth mean a faster connection?
Not always. Bandwidth is capacity, not delay. If latency is high or an intermediate hop is congested, extra bandwidth sits unused and the connection still feels slow. Throughput — real delivered data — is the number that reflects everyday speed.
