Residential Proxy
A residential proxy is a proxy whose exit IP is a real home internet connection assigned by a consumer ISP, making traffic look like an ordinary user.
What it is
A residential proxy is marketed around an IP associated with a consumer connection or ISP ASN. That association does not prove a human visitor or guarantee a low fraud score. Performance, sourcing and consent vary; verify provenance and authorization. A datacenter proxy uses a different hosting model, without an automatic verdict about safety or acceptance.
How it works
Requests egress from a genuine home IP, often drawn from a large pool and rotated, so a destination sees a plausible consumer address. Because that IP is shared with a real household, speed and reliability vary with the host connection. Providers should source these IPs consensually; opaque sourcing is a real risk to weigh. Residential proxies suit tasks where blending in with ordinary traffic is essential and datacenter IPs are blocked — but they cost far more per gigabyte than datacenter alternatives.
How it relates to s4m
The configured s4m service uses datacenter proxy exits rather than a residential pool. Authenticated SOCKS5 (1080) and HTTP (3128) use the configured endpoint. Proxy credentials remain required when you choose another available exit. A dedicated IP is exclusive during its assignment under the service terms. Prior history, assignment duration, availability and supported bindings still matter. An exit IP can have a prior history. Accounts, cookies and browser signals may still identify a user; changing an address does not guarantee a clean reputation. Related topics: datacenter, dedicated IP, proxy plans.
Questions, answered
What is the difference between a residential and datacenter proxy?
A residential proxy exits through a real home ISP IP and blends in with ordinary users but is slower and pricier. A datacenter proxy exits from a hosting IP, which is fast and cheap but recognisable as datacenter. The right one depends on how strictly your target filters hosting ranges.
