How to build your own proxy server on a VPS (3proxy / Dante)
Renting a VPS and installing your own SOCKS5 or HTTP proxy is cheaper than it looks and teaches you exactly how proxies work. Here is a working 3proxy and Dante setup — and an honest note on when running your own is worth it.
What you are actually building
A proxy server is just a program on a machine with a public IP that relays your traffic onward. Rent a small VPS, install a proxy daemon, add authentication and a firewall, and you have your own private exit. Two lightweight daemons dominate on Linux: 3proxy, a tiny all-in-one that speaks both SOCKS and HTTP, and Dante (danted), a robust dedicated SOCKS server. Either gives you a single-user proxy on an IP that is yours alone — which, unlike a shared free proxy, has a clean reputation you control.
The catch is that the exit IP is a datacenter address (your VPS provider's ASN), so it behaves like a datacenter proxy — exactly what s4m sells ready-made, which is the trade-off we will come back to.
3proxy: SOCKS5 + HTTP with auth
A minimal 3proxy config exposing an authenticated SOCKS5 on 1080 and HTTP on 3128. Replace USER/PASS and lock the firewall to your source IP.
# --- Install (Debian/Ubuntu) --- apt update && apt install -y build-essential # build 3proxy from source, then create /etc/3proxy/3proxy.cfg: cat > /etc/3proxy/3proxy.cfg <<'CFG' nserver 1.1.1.1 nscache 65536 timeouts 1 5 30 60 180 1800 15 60 # one user; password auth users USER:CL:PASS auth strong # HTTP proxy on 3128 proxy -p3128 -a # SOCKS5 proxy on 1080 socks -p1080 -a CFG # --- Firewall: only allow YOUR IP to reach the proxy ports --- ufw default deny incoming ufw allow from YOUR.HOME.IP.ADDR to any port 1080 proto tcp ufw allow from YOUR.HOME.IP.ADDR to any port 3128 proto tcp ufw allow 22/tcp ufw enable # --- Test from your client --- # curl -x socks5h://USER:[email protected]:1080 https://api.ipify.org
Dante: a dedicated SOCKS5 server
Dante is a hardened SOCKS daemon. This config authenticates by username and only relays outbound TCP.
apt install -y dante-server
cat > /etc/danted.conf <<'CFG'
logoutput: syslog
internal: 0.0.0.0 port = 1080
external: eth0
# require username/password
socksmethod: username
user.privileged: root
user.notprivileged: nobody
client pass {
from: 0.0.0.0/0 to: 0.0.0.0/0
log: connect disconnect
}
socks pass {
from: 0.0.0.0/0 to: 0.0.0.0/0
protocol: tcp udp
log: connect disconnect
}
CFG
# add a system user for auth, then:
systemctl restart dantedSecuring it, and when to just rent one
Whatever daemon you pick, never leave it open. An unauthenticated proxy on a public IP is found by scanners within hours and turned into an open relay for abuse — the exact origin of most of the sketchy entries on free proxy lists. Always require authentication, firewall the proxy ports to your own source address, keep the system patched, and watch the logs. Running your own proxy is a genuinely good way to learn, and gives you one clean, exclusive datacenter IP for personal use.
The honest trade-off: a self-hosted proxy is still a single datacenter IP, on your VPS provider's ASN, that you must secure, monitor and maintain yourself. If you do not want that operational burden, s4m sells the same thing managed — authenticated datacenter SOCKS5 (1080) and HTTP (3128) proxies, plus a dedicated personal IP when you want one exclusive address without running a server. The API automates the parts you would otherwise script yourself. DIY to learn; buy managed to save time.
Questions, answered
Is it cheaper to run my own proxy on a VPS?
For a single personal exit, often yes — a small VPS plus 3proxy or Dante costs little. But you own the security, patching and monitoring, and the IP is still a datacenter address. A managed proxy trades that operational burden for a fixed price and no maintenance.
How do I stop my proxy becoming an open relay?
Always require authentication, firewall the proxy ports to your own source IP only, keep the OS patched, and monitor the logs. An unauthenticated proxy on a public IP is discovered by scanners within hours and abused.
DIY to learn, managed to ship
Build your own with 3proxy or Dante to understand proxies inside out — or skip the maintenance with authenticated s4m proxies and a dedicated IP that are ready in minutes.
