MTProto

MTProto is the transport and encryption protocol that powers Telegram. Beyond carrying normal messaging, it has an MTProto proxy mode designed specifically to let users reach Telegram where the service is blocked. Unlike a general-purpose proxy or VPN, an MTProto proxy is purpose-built for Telegram traffic and disguises it to slip past censorship. It is narrow by design — it exists to keep one application reachable rather than to route all of your traffic.

An MTProto proxy sits between the Telegram client and Telegram's servers, and a secret-based variant obfuscates the connection so deep packet inspection struggles to identify it as Telegram traffic. Users add the proxy's address and secret to the app, and Telegram traffic then flows through it while everything else on the device is unaffected. Because it is scoped to one app and one service, it is not a substitute for a VPN when you want to protect your whole device or reach arbitrary destinations.

s4m does not run MTProto proxies. Its proxies are general-purpose authenticated SOCKS5 and HTTP endpoints, and its VPN uses WireGuard and OpenVPN. A standard SOCKS5 proxy can also be used with Telegram for general routing, and the VPN protects your whole device. A Telegram-specific MTProto proxy, by contrast, is a single-app tool outside s4m's honest general-purpose offering.
