Proxy Server

A proxy server is an intermediary that receives requests from clients and forwards them to destinations, returning the responses on the client's behalf.

What it is

A proxy server is a machine that stands between a client and the wider internet, forwarding requests and relaying responses. Because the destination talks to the proxy rather than to you, it sees the proxy's exit IP instead of your origin. Proxies come in several flavours: HTTP proxies that understand web traffic, versatile SOCKS5 proxies that relay almost anything, and by direction a forward proxy for clients or a reverse proxy for servers.

How it works

A client is configured to send traffic to the proxy's host and port; the proxy connects onward to the target and shuttles data back. Along the way it can authenticate users, cache content, filter requests and alter headers — which determines its anonymity level. Unlike a VPN, a proxy typically operates per application rather than protecting the whole device, and it may or may not encrypt the client-to-proxy link, so on hostile networks the connection to the proxy itself matters.

How it relates to s4m

Authenticated SOCKS5 (1080) and HTTP (3128) use the configured endpoint. Proxy credentials remain required when you choose another available exit. s4m has selectable public exit configurations. Use the endpoint or profile issued for the protocol and location selected in your account. A dedicated IP is exclusive during its assignment under the service terms. Prior history, assignment duration, availability and supported bindings still matter. Documented default endpoint example: proxy.s4m.online:1080 / proxy.s4m.online:3128. FAQ

Questions, answered

Does a proxy server encrypt my traffic?

Not necessarily. A proxy relays your traffic and hides your origin IP, but whether the client-to-proxy link is encrypted depends on the type. HTTPS destinations stay encrypted end-to-end regardless. For full encryption of everything leaving your device, use a VPN.
