Obfuscation

Obfuscation changes observable traffic features to make a VPN or proxy protocol harder to identify; its effectiveness depends on the implementation and network.

What it is

Obfuscation aims to make privacy traffic harder to identify. Networks may use VPN signatures and deep packet inspection to classify or block connections. Obfuscation changes observable protocol features, sometimes by wrapping traffic in another transport. It is used by tools such as Shadowsocks, V2Ray and REALITY, but the result depends on the implementation and network. It does not guarantee undetectability or access through every filter.

How it works

Techniques include wrapping traffic in another transport and changing handshake or packet patterns. Running OpenVPN over TCP port 443 alone does not make its protocol HTTPS: a filter may inspect more than the port number. Added layers can affect performance, compatibility and configuration complexity. Obfuscation concerns recognition of the protocol; encryption concerns confidentiality of the content. Evaluate both separately and test against the filtering actually present on your network.

How it relates to s4m

s4m does not advertise a dedicated obfuscation mode. For OpenVPN, use the transport and endpoint in the issued profile; TCP requires a matching server listener. Choosing TCP or port 443 alone does not turn OpenVPN traffic into HTTPS or guarantee that it evades protocol detection. WireGuard and the datacenter proxy offering should not be treated as promises of traffic disguise either. If a network blocks VPN protocols, assess a purpose-built obfuscation solution and test it on that network.

FAQ

Questions, answered

What is the difference between encryption and obfuscation?

Encryption protects traffic content; obfuscation aims to make the protocol harder to recognise. Encrypted traffic can still be identified as VPN traffic. Obfuscation is not a guarantee against detection, and TCP port 443 alone does not turn a VPN into HTTPS.
