V2Ray
V2Ray is a modular proxy platform that supports several transport protocols and obfuscation methods, often used to bypass censorship.
What it is
V2Ray is a proxy platform — part of the Project V toolset — rather than a single protocol. It is a framework that can speak several protocols, most notably VMess and, through related projects, VLESS, and can wrap them in various transports and disguises. Its appeal is flexibility: operators combine protocols, TLS and camouflage to build connections that resist deep packet inspection. It is widely used in heavily censored networks where standard VPN protocols are blocked, as a sophisticated form of obfuscation.
How it works
A V2Ray client and server share a configuration selecting a protocol (such as VMess), a transport (TCP, WebSocket, gRPC and others) and optional TLS. Traffic can be made to resemble ordinary HTTPS to a website, so censors filtering by protocol signature cannot easily distinguish it. This modularity is powerful but also complex to configure correctly, and misconfiguration can undermine both performance and detectability. Like other proxy tools it swaps your origin IP for the server's exit.
How it relates to s4m
s4m does not provide V2Ray. Its stack is deliberately simpler and transparent: WireGuard and OpenVPN for the VPN, and authenticated SOCKS5 and HTTP proxies. For privacy, IP masking and general access those cover the common cases. If you need V2Ray's censorship-circumvention flexibility specifically, that is a specialised platform beyond s4m's honest datacenter and VPN offering.
Questions, answered
Is V2Ray a single protocol?
No. V2Ray is a platform that supports multiple protocols, such as VMess and VLESS, and multiple transports and disguises. That modularity is what makes it flexible for bypassing censorship, but it also makes it more complex to configure than a single-protocol VPN.
