Proxy Chain

A proxy chain routes your traffic through two or more proxies in sequence, so each hop only knows its immediate neighbours.

What it is

A proxy chain sends your traffic through multiple proxies one after another before it reaches the destination. Each proxy in the chain knows only the hop before and after it, so no single node sees both your origin IP and the final target. This layering is the same principle behind a double VPN and, in a more sophisticated form, the Tor network. The goal is defence in depth: compromising one hop is not enough to link you to your destination.

How it works

Tools like proxychains push a connection through a list of proxies in order; the destination sees only the last exit's IP. Every added hop increases latency and lowers throughput, because your traffic now makes several round trips, and reliability drops since any dead node breaks the chain. Chaining raises the effort required to trace you, but it is not free — for most tasks a single well-chosen proxy or a VPN is a better balance of privacy and performance than a long chain.

How it relates to s4m

Selectable exits do not constitute a built-in multi-hop chain. Additional hops need explicit routing and testing; they do not guarantee anonymity. s4m supports WireGuard and OpenVPN profiles. The issued profile and client routing determine the exit and which traffic follows the tunnel. An exit IP can have a prior history. Accounts, cookies and browser signals may still identify a user; changing an address does not guarantee a clean reputation. Related topics: datacenter proxy, VPN, no-logs, RAM-first.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Does a longer proxy chain make me more anonymous?

It can raise the effort to trace you, since no single hop sees both ends, but each extra proxy adds latency, cuts throughput and adds a point of failure. Beyond a couple of well-chosen hops the privacy gain shrinks while the performance cost keeps growing.
