Origin IP

An origin IP is your device's real public IP address — the one assigned by your ISP that a VPN or proxy is meant to hide from destinations.

What it is

Your origin IP is your true public address, the one your ISP assigns you, which reveals your approximate location and identifies your connection. It is exactly what a VPN or proxy exists to hide: when you route through one, the destination should see the exit IP instead. Protecting the origin IP is the core of network privacy, because anything that leaks it — even while a tunnel is up — undoes the protection and links your activity back to you.

How it works

Normally a site learns your origin IP directly from the connection. Behind a proxy or VPN it should see only the exit IP, but several leaks can expose the origin anyway: a DNS leak sending lookups outside the tunnel, a WebRTC leak in the browser, an IPv6 leak on a tunnel that only covers IPv4, or a transparent proxy that forwards your address in X-Forwarded-For. A kill switch guards against exposure if the tunnel drops.

How it relates to s4m

s4m has selectable public exit configurations. Use the endpoint or profile issued for the protocol and location selected in your account. An exit IP can have a prior history. Accounts, cookies and browser signals may still identify a user; changing an address does not guarantee a clean reputation. Consult the published privacy policy and technical descriptions for their scope; IP assignment alone does not establish a no-logs or anonymity guarantee. FAQ

Questions, answered

How can my origin IP leak even with a VPN on?

Through side channels the tunnel does not cover: DNS queries sent outside it, WebRTC in the browser, IPv6 traffic on an IPv4-only tunnel, or a dropped connection with no kill switch. Verify with a leak-test tool and enable DNS-leak protection and a kill switch to prevent it.
